The Perigord is an area rich in prehistoric sites. Its geography, geology and climate created the ideal conditions for prehistoric people to settle.

The Lascaux Cave is a prehistoric cave discovered on September 12, 1940 by 4 teenagers in Montignac. The cave is richly decorated with paintings of bison, horses and deer, dating back to the Paleolithic period.

The site was opened to the public in 1948. It quickly fell victim to its success and the site had to close in 1963.

In 1983, a first facsimile, “Lascaux 2”, was opened to the public.

In December 2016, the International Centre for Parietal Art, “Lascaux 4”, opened its doors. All the scenes of the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory” are faithfully reproduced.

The “Grotte de Lascaux”; is a little less than 50 km north of La Grande Veyière.
